A Poem of the Future

Published on Nov 2, 2004

You want to be the one I talk to
when times are good and then
turn bad.

I want you to be the one who smiles
when I make a bad joke,
then tells me not to say it again
later.

I’m only fooling myself to think
that anyone could be better
than you—
the one who knows what’s right
about everything,
the one who hugs me from behind
telling me how much you ‘love’ me.

Why can’t you be that person
always?
Even when the chips are down
and the towel is thrown in.

I don’t want you to give up that smile,
your seductive smile, your
sly grin or even
your ‘happier
when your around’ laugh.

That is what I fell for so many
days ago that
one night when the sun seemed
never to rise,
but then again...
we were
to never
part.
